OFOR, the meaning, the significance and the effect.
Ofor is a very important topic and because of the calls I've been getting from some quarters I think it's best I treat this issue. The Ofor as we know it is the Igbo traditional staff of office and it signifies authority. Therefore anyone in possession of the staff is presumed to have authority conferred on him by his people. There were times in Igbo land when people actually respected the cultures and traditions guiding their land and these cultures were so effective to the point that if a person violates them there would be serious consequences. Take for instance a case a wealthy man who would try to covert another man's land because he has the means to do so, when such cases are brought before the community leaders or concerned authorities as the case may be, the affected people were simply asked to swear before the community shrine and that would be enough to decide the case.
